Oh, dear!

Your Mood is a 2

Ugh, you're feeling pretty bad right now. You're definitely in a funk.

It's finally gone.

If it's been a bit quiet around here the last week or so, it's because I've been working my butt off trying to finish up various projects. Well, as of yesterday, Broken Angel has gone off to my editor. Fingers crossed he likes it, especially as I'd like to write a sequel.

Meanwhile, that leaves me with five weeks to finish up Phantasmagoria. Do-able, I reckon, but don't expect too much from me in the way of witty conversation.

Oh, and just for fun, I created something pretty as a sort of mini celebration for getting Broken Angel in a week early.

Fave films.

90 pages into Phantasmagoria. Lots of rewriting going on. Still don't know if I'm going to pull this off. Questions of the moment - Why do I have so many characters? What's with Vaughan and his oral fixation? Why have I created a character with the initials S.A.E.?

Anyway, following on from my rant of the other day, I thought I share a list of my fave films. In no particular order as they change anyway...

Infernal Affairs - I dream of writing something this tautly plotted.

Dangerous Liaisons - the costume, the dialogue, John Malkovich in that coat.

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls - the music, Zeeman, I could listen to him all day.

Pitch Black - you've gotta love Riddick.

Desperado - stylish visuals, yummy Banderas.

Labyrinth - yeah, goblins and goblin king begging to be made your slave.

Ashura - demons, swording and kabuki theatre.

Velvet Goldmine - 70's glam and hot m/m snoggage.

Amadeus - I cry buckets everytime.

Gothic - who said the Regency was nice!

The Duel - Andy Lau looking scrumptious, supremely funny.

La Reine Margot - blood drenched politics.

So, what are everyone else's faves? Anything you think I might like?

The Departed

So we watched the Departed last night... I'll admit to a few reservations prior to sitting down, but I was prepared to give it a chance. And having now seen it, I have to wonder how they managed to turn a masterpiece of Hong Kong cinema into such a mediocre movie!

Actually, it's very simple - Hollywood just doesn't do subtle. They don't know what subtle is.

Infernal Affairs is subtle, it's edgy, intense, and full of likeable characters (regardless of their dubious morals). The Departed is full of totally unsympathetic, violent, murderous thugs, whom I could give a rat's arse about.

Hollywood: Hmm, let's take a truly amazing script and remove all the subtlety and intrigue and replace them with swearing and violence. Yeah, that'll do it! Oh, and tack on a truly pants ending to really knacker it! (Actually, I've a sneaking suspicion the ending might have been the responsibility of the test audiences.)

The acting wasn't much cop either. DiCaprio was good, but Matt Damon wasn't a patch on Andy Lau, and Martin Sheen wasn't half as memorable as Anthony Wong. As for Jack Nicholson... oh dear god! Actually, I think I'll leave the comments at that.

Watch the original it's infinitely better, and one of my all time favourite films.

The bit I supposedly enjoy...

Meep! Following last week's holiday fun (still not sure if I was dumped on an alien planet or sent to priz for a week), I'm back at the keyboard working hard on Broken Angel and Phantasmagoria rewrites. Broken Angel is in the final stages. I'm pleased with it, having done some tweaks on the ending and clarified a few other points. Now I just need to make it approximately the right word count!

Phantasmagoria is proving slightly more of a headache. I so-oo want this book to be right, but it feels like a god awful mess at the moment. Still, I don't know what I expect. It is largely still the first draft. Got through the first few chapters fairly quickly, but that's not much of an achievement as they were polished as part of the proposal. Now I'm getting into the guts of the story, things are slowing right down. Spent ages last night just getting a few expressions right! Woke up this morning feeling as though I'd had my eyeballs peeled. Just a few pages done so far today, but I have reclaimed my desk - Mr Madelynne had hjacked it for his paperwork some time ago, but no more. It's mine. It has all my things on it. And I've two books to finish, dammit!

Which Tarot Card are you?

You are The High Priestess

Science, Wisdom, Knowledge, Education.

The High Priestess is the card of knowledge, instinctual, supernatural, secret knowledge. She holds scrolls of arcane information that she might, or might not reveal to you. The moon crown on her head as well as the crescent by her foot indicates her willingness to illuminate what you otherwise might not see, reveal the secrets you need to know. The High Priestess is also associated with the moon however and can also indicate change or fluxuation, particularily when it comes to your moods.

Public Service Announcement

QB brought up a question in the comments of the previous post, which has come up on several occasions, so I thought I'd address it here...

To the best of my knowledge A Gentleman's Wager is currently out of print with the publisher. At this moment in time it is ONLY available as an audio download from audible.com | audible.co.uk, or as a used book.

It is not available as an ebook, and I'm not aware of any plans to release it as such. Believe me, I'll let you know if that changes ;-)

But, A Gentleman's Wager will be reprinted (with a spangly new cover) early next year, February in the UK, and April in the USA. This is to coincide with the release of the sequel, Phantasmagoria, in March in the UK and May in the USA.

I think that covers everything!

Hmm....

You wouldn't believe how terrified I am about Phantasmagoria...

Addendum: Forgot to mention that A Gentleman's Wager is also one of the three books in the Black Lace Omnibus 7.
