A few favourites - 2007

So, I've been keeping track of my reading over the last year, enjoying titles by some new-to-me authors and some old favourites, and before I begin a new list for 2008, I thought it might be interesting to pick out a few favourites and titles that made a lasting impression.

Favourite Historical: Stephanie Laurens, A Rake's Vow

Despite the annoyances like the occurrence of "super carriage" Stephanie Laurens can still spin a good story. I've picked this one, because I love Vane Cynster. He's intelligent, cynical and cool, and not too overbearing.

Favourite Yaoi Manga:
Gorgeous Carat vol 1-4, You Higuri

If you're looking for lashings of m/m sex you wont find it here. The relationship here is implied rather than realised, but it's entertaining nonetheless. But poor, poor Florian. He really doesn't have a good time.

Favourite Erotica/Erotic Romance: Tie between Fairyville, Emma Holly & Suite Seventeen, Portia da Costa

I enjoyed both of these books in different ways, and they're so dissimilar I can't actually choose between them. Fairyville is quirky and imaginative if somewhat on the light side, while Suite Seventeen is good old fashioned fun that left me smiling for days afterwards.

Favourite Series:
JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood.

There's no denying that JR Ward is addictive, and there are plenty of things to irk me about the various relationships, but I enjoyed reading them all the same, and in a very short space of time. Worth it for the few moments when Butch and Vishous are actually being honest!

Merry Christmas!

We've sprinkled our reindeer dust, hung up the stockings, and put out a snack for Santa, now the kiddies are in bed and according to Norad and Google Earth, Santa is currently in South Africa. That should give me plenty of time to chill out with a glass of port and a mince pie, before I have to don my elf's hat and help him unload the pressies.

Merry Christmas everyone. Hope you have a good one!

PS. Don't forget the Lust Bites Scavenger Hunt. There are loads of lovely books up for grabs to help keep you warm on these long winter evenings. Contest ends January 5th 2008.

Sniffles

What do you know, I'm loaded with cold again! I blame the kiddies, they catch whatever is going around at school and bring it home to me. Needless to say it's difficult to motivate myself to write about erotic shenanigans when my head feels like it's full of cotton wool and my eyes are watering from the amount of Vicks VapoRub I've slavered on. I'm just hoping the horrible lurgy clears before Xmas. I want to spend a fun day, eating chocolate, drinking port, and playing board games with my family, not snivelling into a tissue.

As for my various works in progress... Well I've pretty much given up keeping word count on my Sven70 progress as things have veered off on a tangent into outlining and synopsis mode recently, which isn't easily quantifiable as a word count. However, the synopsis for AGW-spinoff is now complete, and I'll be sending off the proposal as an Xmas pressie to my editor sometime this week. I really hope he likes it, because I think I could have a lot of fun with this book. I'm developing rather a lot of affection for the three rakehells, who are all rather rude and crude when they're talking amongst themselves, and sometimes when they're not!

Also following the teeny teaser of Desperate Measures I posted on Lust Bites earlier this week, I've rediscovered my enthusiasm for this project too. I think it's time I reviewed it and sent it off to some publishers again. Well, once I've rewritten the synopsis, because currently it reads as terribly dry and convoluted.

Final piece of news is that I've finally finished (!) the first of the teasers I've been writing to bridge the three year gap between A Gentleman's Wager and Phantasmagoria. Not sure what I'm doing with these yet. Could end up as an Amazon Short, an extra on my updated website (another job for over Xmas) or as an extra on my Yahoo Group. I'll let you know.

Highwaymen

Little snippet of my forever work-in-progress, Desperate Measures is up on Lust Bites today. I hope you'll all check it out. I'm planning on doing some work on this book over the Xmas holidays ready to send out into the big wide world again.

Argh update!

I have an outline. It's not a synopsis, but it's a big improvement on what I had earlier this week. This book is now plotted to within an inch of its existence in pretty alternating colours to make it easy on the eye. Okay, so the colours also help identify the different plot strand too! So, tomorrow it's back to writing the actual synopsis. I wish I could say I'm looking forward to it, but really, I'd rather do the ironing. (And just in case you're wondering. I detest ironing.)

Um, yeah, anyway book. Assuming I actually stick to the outline I have (unlikely) then you can expect drainpipes, candles, twins, carriages, poetry, dancing, a bloke that completely makes my heckles rise, stiffs (probably not what you're thinking), snowmen, and 'the Milk Tray man!' (Does anyone remember him?) Incidentally, I did not dub him thus, Mr Madelynne did, but he said it was a good thing. I'm still not settled on a title though.

Arrrrrrrrggggggghhhhh!

This is the worst book ever. I hate it and I've hardly started the bugger. I have ideas, but will they slot together, like hell they will.

Somebody save me from this damn synopsis, and my plethora of characters with issues, my incomprehensible plot and story arc diagrams.

Happy Place!

See this picture! This is my happy place, and boy do I need one today as I'm synopsis writing. I may have mentioned this before but synopsis writing is the single worst thing about being a writer. They are essential. Editors want them, they like to know what the book you're trying to sell them is about, but I can't write them for toffee.

Now, I struggle with these wee beasties even when I have a completed novel in front of me, so you can probably imagine how difficult I'm finding it when I only have three chapters done. You got it! Bloody impossible!

Now, I'll be the first to admit, the process would probably be a whole lot easier if I had a plot that couldn't be summed up in four words: (actually, it can be summed up it two, but humour me) COMPLETE PILE OF CRAP!

Argh! I can plot, I know I can, and I'm sure this was a perfectly good one a few days ago. So what's gone wrong now? Much gnashing of teeth and hair pulling follows. Sigh! Go to my happy place, go to my happy place. Gosh, Takeshi Kaneshiro has nice eyes.

Wish me luck, if you're not all busy scavenging!
