Spot the villian

Today, over at Lust Bites we're chatting about falling for our characters. I always end up hopelessly besotted with mine, but at the moment that's proving something of a challenge as I'm currently working on two novels and a novella. That amounts to eight men vying - yikes!

Anway, here's a quick quiz for you:

Say which of the following list of characters you think are heroes, which are the villians.

a) The mad mercurial bastard, Vaughan, Marquis Pennerley (yes, he's back)
b) Preening fop, Lucerne Marlinscar
c) Dissolute rogue, Raffe Devonshire
d) Demon hunter, Talon
e) Les Incroyable, Henry Tristan
f) Thieftaker, Edmund Stark
g) Demon Prince, Makaresh
h) Highwayman, Gregory Fox

Sorry for the temporary silence, I've been sucked into the world of Animamundi, which is an interactive graphic novel. Now, I'm not much of a game player. Sure, I occasionally watch my other half play Final Fantasy and Resident Evil etc, but this is addictive. The graphics are beautiful and feature lots of bishounen (pretty men), the storyline is seriously twisty and twisted. There's alchemy, crazy experiments, politics, intrigue, serial killers, angels, demons, some big yaoi overtones, oh, and the Hellfire club. I mean, what more could I ask for? That list has probably ticked most of my favourite boxes for any scenario. I think the only things missing are actual depictions of sex between the characters, but there are some yummy kissing scenes and some groping to make up for it. Everything else is sadly left to the imagination.

So far, I've managed 1 bad ending and 3 good ones (good being a subjective term here). I believe there are 12 endings in total. However, I'm not sure if that's 12 good endings or 12 altogether. So, don't expect much from me for a while. LOL!

Actually, despite all this game playing, I've been plodding along quite nicely with Demon-novella. I'm now about 10K in - which is nearly half way - and the plot is slowly coagulating into something workable.

Come to think of it, Demon- book and Anima- mundi work quite well together, since demon- book also has alchemy, politics, intrigue, demons and as many yaoi overtones as I can slip into a book that's supposed to be hetero paranormal erotic romance . Course, demon-book doesn't do fade to grey, because that wouldn't be fun :-D.

Oh, and did I mention I'm developing a thing for fingernails? Lots of men with nicely painted nails in Animamundi. I'm particularly fond of Mikhail's nicely shaped, bronze-coloured ones.

Right, off to do some work...

Light at the end of the tunnel... maybe!

Last night I was tired, which didn't bode well for getting anything done. The tiredness is as a result of my little demon of a daughter's new bedtime routine. This involves us putting her to bed and then her stripping off ten minutes later and peeing everywhere. At which point she chucks toys down the stairs and yells, 'I want potty!' until we manage to bundle her into bed again. (Sidenote: Potty is normally next to her in the bedroom.) This has been going on for about two weeks now and we've been averaging three sets of bedclothes a night! Anyway, after only one minor incident last night she actually decided to do some sleeping for a change - hurray! Mysteriously, my other half decided to do some sleeping too, which left me with potentially hours of peaceful working conditions.

But, as I said, I was tired.

So, I didn't push myself. I potted about. I wrapped up in a duvet to keep warm, and I played Animamundi (yaoi-ish novel type game). Hence, come 9.30pm I'd achieved not a jot.

However, I thought I'd just open the file and take a look at the meagre progress I've made on demon-novella... ZAP! Timewarp... I emerged two hours later having written 3K. I'm astounded :-D. There were even some good words in amongst the dross and I think I wrote a sex scene, well, all right, a masturbation scene, but finally I have characters lusting over each other.

Oh, and somewhere over the course of those two hours the heroine and her sidekick swapped names, and then the sidekick promptly changed sex/gender/I don't know, I'm confused...

Nothing done this morning, mind, but the day is still young. Wish me another timewarp...

The Chronicles of Demon book part 2

Plot - oh, yeah - you are a smidgen thicker, even if my word count is truly pants.

Partly this weekend seems to have flown by and partly I've just been hopeless, consequently things haven't progressed much. The most I did was on Friday night while other half and guest went out for take-away and booze, when I managed to outline the first few chapters and sneak in a few sexy encounters. Still have to write them, of course, but I think I've sorted out my heroine, so it shouldn't be too hard... maybe... hopefully...

On another subject, I've finally sent my vampire story out into the world. Other half has given his stamp of approval, following some tweakage, but we'll have to see what my crit partner thinks.

Demon Book

Oh, plot, where are you? Why won't you fall into place and make everything simple?

I've started on the demon-book. The opening scene is written and I love it. My male protagonist is nice and easy to write, probably because I have a really clear mental picture of him, and any time I'm not sure I can zip over to YouTube and remind myself.

(Hmm, considering sharing the link, but I think I'll wait until I'm a bit further into the story so as not to jinx anything.)

The thing is I've now switched to the heroine's pov and it's going horribly wrong. She just won't talk to me. I have a clear visual image for her, but her voice and attitude are just way off. I can't see what's inside her head. Why does she have to be such a bitch? I think she's hiding some big secret from me.

Sickly me

Yuck, I've come down with some horrendous sickness bug. I had to call my other half back from work to look after the kiddies, so that I could slope back to bed. Eventually surfaced again at 8.30pm and have managed to swallow some flat cola (best thing for stomach ache). The queasiness is mostly gone now, but I still have a vile headache and loads of joint pain. I'm only writing this now because my brand new super lovely laptop has arrived and I want to play with it :-D

Anyway, what with all this illness, I'm glad I finally managed to finish re-writing my vampy story yesterday. I like it now. It's probably not the best thing I've ever written, but it's no longer the dire mess it was either. Lord knows if it'll be the sort of thing Adam is looking for, but no matter, as I've grown to like Raffe and Lucius. I might even revisit them in the future.

Today I was supposed to finally getting on with writing either a crossdressing story, or having a go at something for Scarlet magazine, neither of which have happened, and nor can I see them happening tomorrow. Erotica writing and evil headaches just don't mix. Also, I reckon if I don't get them done this weekend I won't have time, as I intend to start writing my demon novella come Monday. Looking forward to that.

Right, off to crawl back into bed... Wish me a speedy recovery.

Vamps & Public

I've rehashed it. The vampire story, that is. I think it's okay now, but I'll have to give it a proper read tomorrow morning. It has more of an edge to it now, the two vamps having been transformed into mean beautiful monsters, rather than wimpy strangers with pointy teeth. Heroine has half a clue now, which is an improvement on no clue at all.

Oh, Please let it be okay in the morning.

Assuming it is, I'm hoping to get down a short 1.5K story for an anthology I've been invited to submit to. It's nice to get an invitation and I feel I should make the effort. Also, I have a smidgen of an idea, which is something of a novelty. But we'll see as I'm feeling a bit sick. Daughter has already demonstrated that she has some form of lurgy by throwing up over me.

Other stuff:

New lappie still hasn't arrived, nor have a whole heap of books including my author copy of CREAM. But Sex... in Public has. It came this morning, and looks like this.

Now go out and pre-order it :-D UK US

Bleeding Vampires

I finished my vampire story yesterday (sigh). It's terrible, and I mean really truly awful. The only thing that's good about it is the title, and that's stolen. Maybe I'm not cut out to write paranormals.

I will admit to having something of a problem with the whole genre or at least with writing it. The thing is everything is so damn action orientated and pop videoish these days, and I like my horror dark and my ghost stories grainy. I like complexity and emotion and fear, things Underworld and the like just don't provide. And all the novels on the shelves seem to follow similar lines. Arrgh!

Anyway as sort of research (read cheap excuse), we watched Tale of a Vampire again. It's been about 10 years since I'd last seen it, and while it didn't blow me away to the same extent it did first time around, I still love it. Okay, so it looks seriously low budget, but that actually works to its advantage. It's quirky and brutal and there are no super powers in sight. Oh, and Julian Sands plays himself most excellently :-)

But, getting back to my vampire story. I really want to send something for this Wicked Words deadline cause it's the last one for the foreseeable future, but sheesh, I can't send this. Least ways, not if I want the editor to take me seriously. So, I guess I'm gonna have to do some drastic fixing or else write another story (meep), like I have any ideas... But tell me folks, what do you want to read, paranormal wise? Even if it doesn't help me sort this bleeder out, it'll be really useful info when it comes to writing my novella. I think it's pencilled in for later this month.

New Puter

Last night in a fit of craziness I ordered a new laptop! Can't wait for it to arrive, but I wish the darn things didn't cost so much. Still, legitimate business expense and all that...

Best laid plans.

Getting along okay today, despite mucho work avoidance.

I have been trying to write, honest. It's just that reading is so much easier. Email/Blog stuff mostly, although I did finish off Standish too.

Enjoyed it, although there were irritating things about it, like the use of italics (pet peeve) and some seriously dictionary intensive passages (marmoreally anyone, or am I just dense?). Now, I like big words, but sometimes, methinks, simpler is best, and that's all I'm going to say, other than if you fancy some m/m historical romantic drama you might enjoy it too. Oh, and that I liked the Newgate bit best.

But, getting back to the point of this post: the excruciating agony that is short story writing. I'm having the same problem with this call that I had for the last Wicked Words call. The story I had planned is diabolical crap with nary a shred of erotic content. To alieviate this problem I resorted to my tried and true method of soaking in the bath and thinking other thoughts. Bingo, story idea, well, once I'd got out this time. Still that saves me getting pruned. The trouble with said story idea, is it's about ruddy vampires isn't it. Exactly what I said I wasn't going to write about. Bleeding typical. Anyway, I'm going with the flow. Maybe once I've spilled this... cough... gem onto the page the original story will miraculously come good. Fingers crossed, everyone.

Oh, and I've also realised that I need to write at least 1K of words every day if I'm going to get my planned novels and novellas done this year. I know it doesn't sound a lot, but to put it in perspective, I have exactly one month in which to write my paranormal novella - ha- though I'm told miracles do happen.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! I know it's going to be a good one :-) My son is eagerly awaiting the arrival of pirates bearing gold and treasure, and is most disappointed they haven't come today, while I'm trying to eradicate nits and other assorted beasties (slugs) from the household. It certainly hasn't been a very relaxing start to the year, as between taking down the decorations and above, I've also been ironing the equivalent of Mount Doom (more of that tomorrow, methinks, as I still haven't found the school uniforms).

Anyway, writing wise I've accomplished pretty much zilch, so come tomorrow I really need to get back into it. The next Wicked Words deadline is at the end of the month, and I've written a pitiful 1.5K so far. Also need to make progess on the two novels and the novella I'm hoping to complete this year! Eeek! Maybe I'd better make a start tonight. Then again, it's the Torchwood finale, so maybe not.

As for resolutions: I prefer to think more in terms of targets. So novels and novellas obviously come under that. However, I think my main targets for this year are to be less grumpy, and start swimming again. Actually, the two are fairly closely related. I zone out completely while I'm swimming up and down... bliss...
