Book, books, books... and me.

1. Total number of books I own:
I have no idea! Thousands, the house is groaning under the weight of them all. I find it very difficult to part with books even if I know I'll never read them again cause they're complete trash.

2. Last Book I bought:
Well that'd be books, as I never buy them singly. Let's see...

Almost a Gentleman, by Pam Rosenthal
Moongazer by Marianne Mancusi
Wired by Liz Maverick
The Vinter's Luck by Elizabeth Knox
Let Dai by Sooyeon Wan
Banana Fish Vol 6 by Akimi Yoshida
Cantarella by You Higuri
and Lovers in the Night by Fumi Yoshinga

No comments on them yet as I'm still trying to find the time to read them, although I have made a start on Almost a Gentleman and Let Dai.

3. Last Book I read:

That'd be the one I just finished writing, ie Phantasmagoria, prior to that it was Gorgeous Carat by You Higuri. Beautiful artwork, and lovely complex characters. Ah, but poor Florien...

4. Five books that mean a lot to me: (in no particular order)

1. Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien - I devoured this book when I was about thirteen. The history, the characters, the epic journey and the background. Wow... It never fails to captivate me. I've read it about 20 times.

2. The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon K Penman - Why did Edmund have to die... snuffle... I love this book. It combines loads of elements I love, family history, political machinations, history, romance and dubious morals.

3. Tale of a Vampire by Anne Rice - homoerotic vampires, need I say more.

4. The Poldark Series by Winston Graham - Not strictly a book, but a whole series. Actually, I've enjoyed everything I've read by Winston Graham. His characters are often quirky, but they are completely real and multi-faceted. I aspire to his greatness.

5. Yellow by Makoto Tateno - This is the series that really got me hooked on reading manga, and probably one of the most frustrating things I've ever read as I had to wait for each instalment to come out. I adore the way Taki wriggles his way out of encounters with Goh.

Seven days to go until my deadline and I decide to have a major rethink of the final third of my novel. I am officially crazy!

Making a splash

Just a quickie, to tell you all to head over to Lustbites and check out the eye candy. Oh, and leave a comment before Tuesday and you could win yourself a prize. Sadly the prize isn't Alessandro, pictured above, but it might put a smile on your face.

The working day of an erotic writer...

Get up, switch on laptop. Read & reply to email while eating breakfast. Write. Get to half past one and realise it's probably time for lunch. Write some more. Make tea for family. Check email again. Stuff kiddies into bed. Write. At about half eight realise I'm braindead. Take a break by watching an hour of comedy. Write. Decide at about 2am that's it for the night. Chill out watching Gackt wiggle his butt on YouTube, and by watching Japanese TV! 3am, realise my eyes feel like they've been peeled. Sleep.

Obviously, it's not always like this... Just at the moment, while I have a scarily close deadline.

So, two weeks to go and only now am I writing the details of the title scene of Phantasmagoria. Not a great place to be, I suspect. But hey, it's just tweaking, right! The scene was hazy before, now with a little help from Mr Madelynne, the details are bringing it to life.

Actually, I think I love this scene now. It so deliciously gothic.

Meanwhile, I've been thinking about names today. Character names, that is, and where they come from. I know some people surf the web, or trawl baby name books, and phone books, and even stick pins in maps, and I've done all these things too, but I can't name my main characters by this method. My main characters always seem to arrive with their names attached.

Sometimes I'll get a name in my head, that just pops up again and again for weeks until suddenly a whole character appears. Not that I let them totally dictate. Odd or unsuitable names can create the wrong impression, or reader expectations. In those cases, its a simple case of find and replace on the finished manuscript. Zap! Instant conformity. Depressing, eh?

How does everyone else name their characters?

Working hard.

Argh - one minute it's July, the next it's mid August. Needless to say, between family holidays and upcoming deadlines, my blog has been sadly neglected. Hopefully, that will change soon. Meanwhile, enjoy.

Thursday Thirteen: Phantasmagoria

Thirteen Things about MADELYNNE ELLIS

1. I'm working on Phantasmagoria, the sequel to A Gentleman's Wager.

2. At this moment, I'm supposed to be rewriting Chapter 12.

3. My deadline for this book is in 18 days time.

4. This book takes place three years after the events of A Gentleman's Wager, in 1800.

5. I'm hopelessly in love with Vaughan (again).

6. I'm convinced that everyone who reads this book will hate me by the halfway stage.

7. The story doesn't end with this book. (Still need to convince my editor of that.)

8. I intend to write two short bonus teasers to accompany the book, which will cover key events leading up to the opening of Phantasmagoria. (More on that later.)

9. There are at least two characters introduced in this novel that I want to write more about.

10. I'm praying the covers for Phantasmagoria and the reprint of A Gentleman's Wager are gorgeous.

11. I have three defining factors which I use when writing Vaughan, but I'm not saying what they are.

12. He's still mad, bad and dangerous to know. (Grin.)

13. 'It's still all Dom's fault.'
