I'm struggling with lots of things at the moment. My WIP won't work and the thought of writing a synopsis is giving me nightmares. Is it always this hard? Looking back over my posts, maybe it is. I suspect I need a break, but I don't want to walk away from this one until I have the proposal done and sent, and Xmas is just around the corner, so there'll be plenty of enforced relaxation time then.

Meanwhile, here's a teeny tiny sneak peak at Pennerley's Great Hall!

Blobs on the page...

My writing method has become rather haphazard over the last few weeks. The last few novels I've been very methodical about for the most part, writing from beginning to end, and I'm trying to stick to that for this current project but it's not always happening. Actually, it's not just that I find I'm suddenly sketching out scenes for later in this book, but I'm actually writing rough drafts of scenes that take place in the following book, and the one after that. Yep, I appear to be writing bits of three different books at once. Admittedly, they are part of a series and related, and the characters appear throughout, but it's still disorientating. I feel as if it'll all run away with me if I'm not careful.

Meanwhile the book I'm supposed to be getting the proposal together for is slowly taking shape. I have a much clearer idea of where I'm headed now, but I suspect it's going to be a project that demands SEVERAL major rewrites. At the moment it's rough, and I know the complex emotions behind peoples actions aren't nearly finely tuned enough. Also, I'm trying very hard not to become too entranced by one of the secondary(ish) characters. Musn't make him more exciting than the hero or everyone will wonder why the heroine doesn't run off with him instead. Ah, the dilemma's of writing.

On a slightly different topic, I'm trying to decide which book to read next. Hmm, cast your votes...

Emma Holly's Fairyville
Mathilde Madden's The Silver Collar (already read an early version of this one, but this is the finished goods)
More of Sooyen Won's Let Dai
or All about Love, by Stephanie Laurens.

I've braved Yahoo today and formed a new group so people can keep up to date with new releases. Assuming anyone wants to :-) It also includes sneak previews from my forthcoming titles Broken Angel, and Phantasmagoria. You can click here to join, or follow the link in the sidebar.

Mucho drool worthy...

The cover flats for Phantasmagoria arrived this morning and I have to say... Ahahahahah! They are so-oo so-oo lovely. This picture just doesn't do them justice. In the above picture the cover looks blue, when actually it's more of a midnight bluey-purple, which is just about my favourite colour in the world. Plus the lettering really stands out. God, I love this cover (observe mad skippety dance).

Okay, calm again now...

The other bit of excitement about the cover is that Phantasmagoria will be the first book to be published by Black Lace in the new Trade Paperback size. So, not only do I have a super duper cover, it's going to be on a nicely proportioned book. Pretty amazing really! Shame the rest of my existence sucks so much.

I thought it was time for a little change around. I find my blog/webspace is a little like my home. If my head is getting cluttered, I know it's time to have a shift around and rearrange the furniture. It drives other people mad, but hey, it works for me.

I haven't exactly been making much progress on my various Sweat 70 projects, so I doubt either Sven or Gackt are speaking to me, but I was feeling so run down I spent the weekend in bed with flu. Strangely, or perhaps not, I'm feeling a lot better about my writing having had an enforced rest and done some other inconsequential stuff like watching DVD's and playing games eg Absolute Obedience (see image). The latter has been sitting neglected on my desktop for months.

Well anyway, either Absolute Obedience, or the wonderful m/m novella I'm reading for another writer has inspired me, because AGW spin-off has now ballooned to two books, which I have to write before I can possibly get back to Vaughan, Bella and Lucerne, because these events are all setting up the next stage of their relationship, be it indirectly. Of course, all this is rather dependent on my editor. Fingers crossed there. Off to make some progress...

Dirty Girls

It's not due out until March next year, but here's the nipple-showing cover of Dirty Girls, edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel, in which my story Carn Euny appears. Rachel's also in the process of setting up a blog to go with the book, featuring snippets and interviews etc

The Strangeness of Proofs.

No Svening for me this weekend, unless you count the 200 words I wrote in the bath. I have my excuses though - Phantasmagoria proofs. I think I have eye strain now, but I've managed to get through them.

Proofs are strange little beasties. You don't have the luxury to sit back and enjoy the story and you only get the most basic impression of what it's like to hold the book in your hand. Mostly, you're too busy trying to pick out teeny tiny misprints and stuff in a sea of small print. Naturally all this scrutiny brings out the worst of my self-doubts. Is the first half pacy enough? I don't know, I was reading it aloud at a snail's pace, trying to digest every word. Is Vaughan completely deranged? Very probably. Am I?

Well I think I'll leave that one unanswered.

It is odd though, having come to the end of the story, I'm not really feeling all that wistful. Normally, I'm busy mourning the loss of my characters. I think it's because I know in this case there's still more to come. Also, despite my abysmal progress with my Sven project (AGW-spin-off), I'm starting to really get a feel for the story and enjoy it. I just hope when it gets as far as the submission stage, my editor feels the same way. Still wish I had a title for it. The working title is utter crap and I'm not even slightly happy with it.

Actually, titles could be a whole new rant. I find it odd that at the moment I have several projects I want to work on, but the two I've decided to proceed with are the two that don't have titles. AGW3 has a title, as does the follow-up to Broken Angel.

Well, it's now just gone midnight, so I think I deserve a nice break. I could write, maybe I should even try to as I know I won't get a thing done tomorrow, but considering what's on the schedule, I'm not going to beat myself up over it. Hmm, a nice book to curl up with methinks... or a maybe a spot of YouTube.

I'm trying...

... to sweat that is. But someone out there seems determined to keep me from my work in progress. We're only three weeks in and I've already had a set of proofs, a family holiday and now... another set of proofs. And proofs always need checking and returning yesterday.

Gad, all I want to do is finish the first damn chapter of AGW-spin-off. It doesn't seem much to ask, does it?

Anyway, please wish me luck with the Phantasmagoria proofs (doesn't seem like five minutes since I finished writing it). I really hope I don't spot any major plot holes, or dubious edits, or six-zillion spelling mistakes and historical inaccuracies. I really hope I like it too.

The picture, BTW, is from Ai No Kusabi, which is my favourite piece of yaoi anime, and a fantastic story. The novel has finally been translated and is due out later this month. I think it might be my reward for reaching say 25K.
